Ill health forced a return to his roots where he opened a small store, ran the Post office and carried out the duties of sub-inspector of the poor. An Associate of the Botanical Society of Edinburgh, his general love of nature found expression in gardening enabling him to supply flowers, fruit and vegetables to Oban. His grandson, Colin, remembered delicious strawberries and gooseberries - and a pet robin. The Bard enjoyed long walks, returning inspired to sit at his desk overlooking the magnificent Ardmucknish Bay and write with Celtic passion on the subjects that moved him.
