Arkansas is a state that is located in the southern portion of the U.S. It is bordered by six different states, and the Mississippi River sits on the eastern most portion of the state, acting as a border. While some parts of the state are mountainous, other parts of the state are comprised of lowland areas. The capital of Arkansas is Little Rock, which is also the biggest city. This state is known for having a large number of caves, and a sizeable percentage of the land is protected in the form of National Parks. Like other states in the south, the climate is generally humid subtropical, and the summers can be quite hot. Hernando de Soto was one of the first Europeans to arrive in the region, and it was inhabited by Native tribes like the Caddo and Quapaw.Arkansas was admitted to the Union in 1836, and it has a total population of about 2.6 million. The GSP for this state in 2003 was $76 billion, a bit higher than Mississippi. It should be noted that Arkansas has the lowest cost of living of any state in the U.S. Some of the products that are heavily produced in this state include milk, rice, paper, soybeans, eggs, metal tools, and electrical products. Recently, a number of automobile companies have begun opening plants in the state, and this has led to the creation of more jobs.
