Statistics from 2005 show that the population for this state is approximately 4.3 million. It was admitted to the Union in May of 1788. The two states which border South Carolina are North Carolina and Georgia. South Carolina is a coastal state that sits next to the Atlantic Ocean. Geographically, this state is split into four regions, and these are the Lowcountry, Coastal Plain, Foothills, and Sand Hills. Like many states in the south, the climate for South Carolina is humid subtropical. However, it should be noted that the temperatures can drop to below freezing during January. It should also be noted that South Carolina does not have an inheritance tax.
